OF KILLING YOUR OWN SELF?

HEY GUYS, grabe napag-tripan ni ma'am in one of our major subjects kung paano ka daw mamatay. And here's mine . . . . . . . . . .

Renowned Host Kevin Carlo Abila

August 16, 1995 – September 13, 2043

Kevin Carlo Rosal Abila, commonly known as “KC”, the host of the hit culture- oriented magazine show in the Philippines, “Morning, Noon, and Night”, peacefully joined our Creator at the age of 38, last September 13, 2043 as a result of his lifelong battle with diabetes. His entire family and friends in the broadcast and journalism industry was with him from the beginning of his battle against the disease until his very last breath on Earth.

Survived from poverty, KC was the eldest of the five children of Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand and Lilian Abila, natives of Libon, Albay in the Bicol Region, who permanently settled in San Juan City together with their four other children after KC found a satisfying job in the country’s premiere station, ABS- CBN, as an editor. They settled there for good and lived prosperously after completing his graduate degree in the University of the Philippines, where he also garnered his diploma in Development Communication. He’s been a household name after he bagged the rights to host his first ever show “Simply KC”. He was then managed by Boy Abunda after the latter discovered the talent of the former. He was currently one of the hosts of the top- rating noontime show “Trip mo to!” and a columnist in The Manila Bulletin. In 2033, he co-founded HAPLOS, a civic and volunteer organization that aims to help the unserved people and the rural folk in the farflung areas of the country find opportunities and potential resources in their respective places that will boost the local community without being compared to the urban setting.

His closest friends in the industry have organized a memorial celebration of his life this Saturday, September 16th, at ABS- CBN Convention Center. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Heaven’s Garden in Makati City while the burial will be held on the 20th at 11:30 am, Heaven’s Garden Memorial Park, Makati City. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to his organization, HAPLOS, and continue supporting this as his legacy.

Making the Very Power of a Story: A Success

Tsk tsk. Difficult, isn’t it?

As the Editor-in-Chief of our school paper for a year back in high school, the only thing I do is to feature and praise significant people in the school and community- schoolmates who received recognitions in out-of-school competitions, a duly awarded principal, a newly-paved pathway and new buildings in which the school waited several years until finally granted in, and our Barangay Captain’s project plans in the next years of his second term. I don’t really care to start a story at all- I just write whatever I think will interest readers, do some sort of revision and edit, and then publish and before I knew it, it was finally on my mom’s fists. I witnessed how powerful the school paper is when it comes to influencing the readers. Yes, they have praised my staff only to realize that we could have actually done better. And so I decided to take up this course.

News writing is a bit different from that in high school. Same rules and patterns, but the way it needs to be written and appeal to readers made it quite complex yet challenging. Writing the lead is one heck of its difficult parts- a crucial and exciting part, perhaps.

Perhaps it would be easier to make a lead with a guide in the form of a transcribed interview. You know the issue and how it flows from the most to the least important details. The challenge, however, is on how to organize the ideas and arrive at a very interesting, eye catchy, flavourful, and complete lead in which the appreciation and satisfaction of the entire story, depends.

Just like any other story, writing the lead is just that difficult and demanding, in some ways. It seems that the narrative, descriptive, and summary types of lead appear the same on our naked eye when read without complete understanding. What fate awaits me if I had to make my own lead? Thank God, background, stocked-knowledge really helps this time around. Time-consuming, requires a lot of your patience and effort, and forces you to revise again and again. Just as everybody else, I tried and tried and eventually composed a lead for every type. I just hope it will be correct. Do I have to say “please”?

To sum it up, lead is the very power of any story. The impression and life of the entire story lies within it. Whether as future writers or effective readers, we must learn how to make and/or distinguish how lead is constructed to fully understand the essence of a story- not by being critics, but being educated enough to react well and appreciate development as a form of reality and possibility.

Lead, summary or not, it must appeal to readers just as how you want them to figure out what you really want to pursue in writing your article. Else, be contented in reading those boring stuffs in newspapers’ front page. Peace!

Identifying the Portal of Change: A Challenge for Beginners

Tired of reading boring and consistent news stories of the same issues? Try investing your attention to development stories and earn more than just money.

Every story is unique from one another. This principle applies in distinguishing development-oriented news articles from straight news. What we believe to be development stories might not be. Story of development is something that requires full analysis and knowledge on the issues besetting the society. A development news story is something that tells us significant and relevant changes or improvements in the fields where most people are engaged in. Most likely, people tend to associate a development story as something that informs farmers of new breeds of crops which can resist any kind of pest infestation and may grow at any kind of environment, something that features the heroism of not just a single nor prominent individual, but a success of an organization in their efforts of uplifting the lives of underserved populace, something that influences people to arrive at their best possible solutions to their pervasive problems using their potentials, and most of all, a development news is a story of survival and growth, change and reforms, and mass involvement and social improvement- where the common people are the real characters, occupying the spotlight of reality and time. However, there’s always been villains of development, trying to mess it up.

The fact that development stories separates them from the ordinary and usual type of news corresponds to the fact that most of us find it hard to distinguish and categorize them. The reason behind- we are in a society of critics and news seemed to be a hate-it-or-love-it stuff. An infected as well as a very sensitive society, indeed.

Most newspapers seldom feature relevant news of changes and improvements in various aspects. I honestly think of the possibility that they limit development news simply because people are not that open and interested in these trends. They are more likely to read political and economic bits, which undeniably occupy most of the pages, and advertisements for job opportunities and entertainment. So, it would be better to prioritize their sales, I guess. Or just to represent the people’s side, perhaps.

Back in the laboratory which went messy after the activity, I find it quite easy to compile development oriented news articles and hey, I am a DevCom student so I must know them. Besides that I had a Philippine Star issue for that day while most of my lab mates had Inquirer as their source. Most of the news are about politics and security concerns, a bit of development-oriented stories-almost the same as that in the entertainment section, and tons of classified ads and advertisement. Business as usual, huh?

Newspapers, no matter what, are still portals of information and discoveries. Most news are not of development concern but the good thing is that writers make stories, whatever it is about, to make people sympathize and react. Reactions on the stories, most of which calls for reforms and changes, are the mere foundations of development. Every news can be a development story when people try to discover what it really wants to share. Every news is a call for a change and every development story is a success of a news that once been published and gained attention and action from the people. Now that’s what it takes to make and search for development news- understanding and appreciation.

Personalities Wowed LB Audience, Encouraged Studs To Empower for Youth Republic

A roaring, ear-blasting crowd stumbled with deep excitement and pure amazement as three undeniably influential personalitites- Ramon Bautista, Ana Alexandra Castro, and Lourd de Veyra, graced the DL Umali Auditorium with their timeless charisma and influence as they ought to empower UPLB studs thru the launching the Youth Republic- Youth Empowerment, last January 21, 2012.

The three-hour discussion forum, now on its fourth year, aims to encourage youth sector in various institutions, mostly in schools and universities, in building a self-governing body through leadership and unconditional services, and urges youth in worthwhile yet timely actions such as in community-involvement, media literacy, and social awareness for empowerment and development.

Leading the entire pact was Diliman's USC Vice-Chairperson and proud bisexual, Alex Castro who tackled the misconceptions about gender and equality. As a founder of the “Proud to be LGBT Campaign”, Castro cited her personal experiences when she revealed her real sexual-preference after her fearless confession of having a girlfriend. Born into oppression and criticisms, both from her family and others, the BA Psychology student of UP Diliman shared the role of liberalized mind in empowering youth, ending her timely speech by encouraging everyone to respect one another by letting everybody live up on the lives they chose.

Renowned vocalist and broadcaster Lourd de Veyra enchanted the audience as he came next in a very interesting, jaw-dropping litany. Highlighting the media's and internet's influence and contribution in affecting the country's presentday realities in the society and how people use these modes of communication in their daily advantage. With such a manly and complete tone he received tons of applause as he ended up his topic by reiterating that youth must set free of their minds first before planning to set free of the nation.

As expected from the audience, Ramon Bautista received the wildest cheers, from the time he went to the stage until he put a smashing reminder at the end of his topic in literacy. The acclaimed internet action star once again proved his hype to the crowd of scholars as he left them mesmerized by his viral videos, citing how one could use the opportunity from social media and its scope in empowering the youth and building relationships. Prior to that, he shared his secrets by having a self-adopted 3G's in life- gutts, glory, and gold, in which according to him, sealed his life and fortune. For once, the UP Diliman professor has shown his best side by summing it up by saying “Huwag muna umibig!” at the end of his speech, leaving the entire DL Umali in complete amazement.
An open-forum followed quickly after the speeches of the guests which satisfied the audience.
The activity was made possible thru the sponsorship of BUKLOD UPLB.

The Unsung Wonders of Interviews

The Unsung Wonders of Interviews
Kevin Carlo Abila, UV-4L

Life is full of inquiry, but it has the answers, too. Work hard and you’ll get it.

Most of us find it difficult and demanding to conduct an interview. It is really is. However, we are often amazed of how it plays a great impact in our lives with its wonders and benefits.

Make a difference. Some people may become more knowledgeable and skillful than us. We need some of them in order to understand the things that we need further understanding, but in the end, the fact and the truth lye within us. No matter what, our learning must not just be kept in a CD or in any document, or our experience from this activity will remain so. We must take this opportunity to learn more and use what we have learned for our lives.

Strive! We almost gave up the interview from the very beginning. The consistent conflict of schedules never spares us. From the time we met and talked to her for permission, it seems that her mouth speaks nothing but hesitation. We understand the fact that hers is not an easy task- from the management of a big school, to the way she slices her time for her office and family. Thank God, my group had that so- called initiative and charm. We were able to convince her and another thing to be appreciated, she agreed with the schedule but refused to have a copy of the interview outline. Interviewer or interviewee must always be ready and prepared. The script and outline will never be your life- savers.

Enjoy! Have fun while discovering new things. Education reform- it’s been the point of debates and review for several decades until it was finally approved and implemented. The only thing we can do now is to obey, respect, and be responsible with this reform. I just hope everybody would appreciate this change since the government has been very fruitful in taking risks and new horizons to bring back not just its good image, but the trust from its constituents, too. I love to see students having fun in the class while learning well. Mother tongue, perhaps, is the best idea of K-12. I just hope that it will encourage students to participate more in class discussions. I love the idea that students will gain more opportunities to hone their abilities and interests through their own choices- choice which will be the mere foundation of their future and will affect the prospects of the nation. Youth is really our hope.

Tons of information, single, most important reflection. Sweat may be as irritating as the hardships we have encountered, but there’s always been the promise of satisfaction in every finale. Perfection can be set aside during interviews, because to discover new things while meeting new people is way beyond memorizing or whatever we call it. Now who says that you cannot do different things at the same time? Taking risks might be good. But ours proves that you can have a better outcome if you planned it well, while the talent in you will just appear in the field. We are not the best interviewers nor we have the best expert for our topic but the best thing to cherish is that everyone can be an expert, equipped with his own views and stand on an issue. We have different tasks and jobs. They say that you can be more intelligent by any means of educating, which is undeniably, one of our major tasks as DevCom practitioners.

As I always say, this is just the start of our journey. There are more challenges and hardships to come. But then again, it would be better to appreciate the essences and importance of these things arlier for guidance so that we can do it better the next time around.

Sweat may be as irritating as the hardships we have encountered, but there’s always been the promise of satisfaction in every finale.

A WHOLE NEW JANINE: POST PAGEANT PICS

An Epic Farewell On A Scenic Dawn

AN EPIC FAREWELL ON A SCENIC DAWN
Kevin Carlo Abila

It was a typical dawn when everybody in the house played a panoramic scene, where a mom sheds her tears, pouring all over an innocent, naked angel, while the rest of her kids were gently brushing their lips from the poor baby’s wet forehead down her pale cheeks. The rest were projected in a static position with sympathizing eyes.

It was a morning of agony and tears, filled with nostalgic memories- a lonely dawn to everybody. I hope it will be peaceful for her.

Even before my mom gave birth to my one and only sister, she often told me that she preferred having more daughters than sons. She wanted girls whom she will play dolls and make cute dresses for them (for she is a dressmaker). My grandma have also told me that even before my mom’s younger years, she had already confessed her desire of having daughters when she’ll get married and bear her first child. It should be a girl and it was her plea every night. It was her dream until when I was born and became her very first child. Her dreams didn’t ruin her treatment to me since I was her first angel and I can proudly say that I have the best mom in the world. My relatives told me of how she used to take care of me. She spent her time with me even after she had a lot of chores left undone in the house. It was her passion and devotion until she gave birth to my first younger sibling, Karl. It took several months before I was able to cope with the new environment where I am not the main focus and priority. Thank God that I have made it to accept my first challenge as an elderly. Yeah, I am the “one-to-beat” when it comes to accepting realities in life, undisputed. I do. I needed to.

Somehow, I felt overwhelmingly lucky to have brothers and sisters whom I can share my old toys, tell them my past experiences, teach them how to eat promptly or when to take a bath, how to count, and how to write. It would be of great joy if I will be the one whom they will depict as a role model and I will really look forward in them if they will come with me and do some out-of-this-world activities. I was just a child then, hoping to have a number of siblings whom I will spend the rest of my life, embedded with positivity and dreams for them. And it was mom who made me feel that nothing is impossible, that I can live up with my expectations and goals.

It took several years before mom finally bare the child of her dreams and she took the colors of the rainbow when she knew it was a girl. She made it to live with her dream. On the 29th of February, 1999, papa celebrated two milestones in his life- first, his birthday, and the other, the birth of his first daughter. Sharjah, the place where my dad used to work abroad, was chosen to be the name of his unica hija. By then, the couple had just constructed the longest and perhaps, the most beautiful name of all their children. Kaye Sharjah Jennica became the official name of my first sister.

I thought mom was contented of having such a nice and naughty girl in the house when she gave birth to Bambie (Kaye) but it seems that she’s enjoying her company to the point that she wanted another baby girl. We, her kids were all against this idea but she insisted that it was good to have a big family, and besides that Bambie is growing and she missed raising a young one. She told papa of how she came up with the new idea since she really missed caressing an innocent baby girl. It felt somehow sad on my side since I remembered her sleepless nights and tiredness during daytime. But she still got pregnant for the fourth time. After several years of enjoying a feminine in the house, of course with our mom’s exception, we will be having our second sister and Bam’s successor of the family’s attention. Yes! It was confirmed that mom’s bearing her second daughter.

I was a witness of how she came prepared for this new milestone in her life as a mother. She spent most of her time in her bed and that was a bit problem for us, the remaining kids. I always come to school late for the reason that nobody cares to come after me. Since then, I have understood the task that was bestowed upon me right after my birth- to become patient enough in dealing with my younger siblings, to be the best example, and the best brother they can have. I thought my mom’s natal day would end up my sufferings but I was wrong. It was the start of the family’s darkest episode in life.

June 25th, 1997,it was still dark when we were awaken by several shouts from a suffering lady. We quickly jumped off our bed only to find out that it was our mom, calling our dad, who was just on his way summoning a nurse from the nearby clinic. My grandma was staying beside my mom and the rest of us took pity upon seeing her condition. Our neighbors were gathering at the sala to show their care and presence. This is one of the things that I used to love in our place, in the barrio, that during these kinds of situations, at any kind of unbearable times, people will always be there to offer help and show their concern. It took few more minutes before dad came back rushing with the nurse, who, upon arrival, quickly approached my unconscious mom. Everybody was with the nurse until she was carrying the newly- born baby. I thought it wasn’t awkward not to hear the baby crying right after birth unlike what I have seen and heard during the last two deliveries of my mom. It was just the same year that I fully understand the idea that a baby must cry right after birth.

Being her first child, I was summoned by my weak mom to come beside her. It was so captivating that I quickly come beside her. She told me to kiss my sister and I did so. The moment I kissed my sister aroused the greed in my heart to continue what I am doing. The rapture it gave was so sensual. I kissed an angel! My other siblings followed what I am doing and we enjoyed brushing our lips to her cottony cheeks. But I forced myself to stop upon seeing my mom’s glittering eyes and dad’s sad expression. Everybody seemed to be sad. But why are they sad? Is there any problem? I asked myself. If there’s the idea of the so called “tears of joy”, then it must be the same thing arousing at everyone’s eyes. It could be joy unless they were crying for . . . a dead? But who? The baby? No, it can’t be this little princess of innocence. No way! And there’s really no way out.

Realizations bombarded my resistance as a brother. Mom confirmed through her tears what I was thinking. The house was full of cries and hounds. The recent addition to our family had just passed away. If it was a painful wound profusely bleeding for me, then what more for my mom who spent time and tender love just for nothing but pain and shock. It must be her biggest failure in life, as proved by her agonizing eyes. But if there’s someone who’s really melting his heart during that time, it could be my great father. Seeing the suffering of her wife, and feeling the loss of her unfortunate child, it could be crushing and tearing his heart into the smallest pieces possible. It was a dawn of agony, tears, disappointment, failure, and loss of a possession. But it was the rising sun who reminded everyone of something- that the Earth is not a portal of darkness, that the Creator ensures the balance and existence of life, and that a sun will always break the quiescent dawn. Everybody proceeded to the preparations for the burial.

She became the first one in the family to join our Almighty God. I thought it was just too early for her to go. What if she was born the next coming days rather than that horrible day, will she stay with us to play? For sure, mom will make new dresses for a newly purchased doll for her, while dad will cook his best dish. And the rest of us will be playing all-day long. We will make her the happiest baby in the whole, wide world! I promised it to her if she came back, but it just made me cry the whole day.

I cried and the tears rushed along the verge of my soul as in a hurry or rage but I don’t care. For me, she had left a will at death. Her stay was not even a visit nor a sojourn. I knew it was adjourned- a life postponed for she’s going somewhere else- in the right place, in her true home. All of this time, I always think that it was just a horrible nightmare that I don’t want to dream of again but being afflicted by such a sore distress, I have finally acquired the aptitude, the acceptance. I should be strong. I am her benignant brother and all I want is to make her happy even if it would mean letting her go. The light now besieged me and declared my acceptance by granting my sister’s tomb a white rose- pure and alluring as the fading moon- a proclamation of acceptance to her loss and grant of peace and tranquility.

Maybe, God is really that good when He decided to get her so that she may live in the best world, in His paradise where there’s no threat, no evil, no fear, no bad things. Maybe, He has predicted that she’s not going to be happy with us or maybe, she’s that lucky to be with Him. I hope so.

Mourning over the early loss of my beloved sister, I finally crafted in my mind that I should be thankful that my family will have a watching angel from above, whom we can ask help, guidance, and grace. She’ll continue being a part of our one, big, and happy family.

Meanwhile, mom had a year before she was able to accept the tragic loss of her child, the very first in her life. While up to this present time, she always thank God for having two more handsome graces in return. Dad consumed each day making every single second of our lives more fascinating, more visible. And perhaps, the K5 endures the joy and dispels every possible cause of agony which may threaten the visibility of the family’s future.

Considering that tragedy, I always think that she’s always there to maintain and reserve her family some space in heaven where us, her family will live together, eternally, happily. I knew she’s a beautiful angel, charming as the picturesque dawn when she was born, resembling the beauty of a rising sun, which will be forever imprinted in our hearts.

I made a promise in the same moment when the cold breeze dances with the dandelions along the ocean of weeping grasses while the singing nightingale awakens the evergreen meadow amidst the promenade of misty clouds, the golden rays driving away the darkness that encompasses the Earth. Now, I can see the clarity, the purity, and the truth.  At the horizon, there stood a young lady of ivory wings, resembling that of a magpie or swift, wearing a silk dress spangled by the laces of rose petals, waving her hand happily while proudly erecting the tectrices of her wings. Her eyes were twinkling and sparkling like a pristine spring that highlighted her innocence, so tactile. I knew it was fragile and so I need to make my promise and I must really thank God that I have made it before the sun rises, before the dawn breaks.

I promised it will be a peaceful dawn for her, a dawn without the dew, and I succeeded.
