THE ART BEYOND THE SCIENCE OF BROADCASTING

That was still my elementary years when I began to realize I was born to be a media man. I’ll be a journalist, broadcaster, speaker, or any related media profession.

Since the day I began to mimic what these people, under this profession whether in a radio station or in a TV studio, I have also realized the essence of broadcasting and public communication. I bear in my mind that I am going to be such in order to be famous. Come my high school years and my growing passion and desire to take a degree in communication in college began to sprawl my dreams. But my dad wanted me to become an engineer. My mom sees me as an architect, and my uncle, a navy, wanted me to follow his footsteps.

These made me think deep: would these people want me to pursue these specific courses because they think it will give me a better life than communication would? Would they accept my decision, if I do have an option, to take my dream course?

Those times were crucial. It was between what they wanted me to become in the next few years, and my forever-and-ever dream course- a matter of choice that would totally change my entire life and future. The journey has yet to begin. There is no turning back whenever I made this great decision and I am aware of all the consequences of this action.

My place would probably the melting point of new and headlines. My hometown, Albay, has always been in the limelight and coverage of media and broadcast stations, local and nationwide. Issues ranging from local politics, calamities such as the usual occurrence of typhoons, volcanic eruption, flood, landslide, and earthquake, and various problems and conflicts within the vicinity of this place: mining, climate change adaptation, corruption, clash of culture and religion, political dynasty. These and other forms with journalistic or press value and import have greatly shaped my ambitious choice to pursue communication.

My sought after profession, being a broadcaster - a public servant!

I am a communication arts student. But because of my interest in radio and television broadcasting, I am taking DEVC 30, Fundamentals of Community Broadcasting, to experience the all-I-wanted-to-do and all-I-wanted-to-have course when I was still a member of the DevCom family. When it comes to choosing a major, it’s always been the apple of my eye. Though I am not a DevCom student anymore, I always try to uphold its approach in everything I do as a communication arts major. That is, to remember that communication is always inclusive, to fulfil my duties as a communicator, bearing in mind that it is a public service.

In a span of several minutes, I was able to compose this entry- a proof of my interest in this field that radio and TV has influenced me.
